Human rights Violation in Somaliland

On 4th of September 2024 Somaliland security forces have arrested Mohamed Abib who’s a member of the minority tribes Gabadurse, he is also an outspoken member of the Somaliland parliament.

The arrest which took place upon Abib’s return from the United Arab Emirates has sparked widespread of condemnation from opposition parties and intellectuals, raising concerns over political dissent and freedom of expression in the region. Abib was detained without an official statement from the government, fuelling further speculation and unrest. Several political parties and rights groups in Somaliland have condemned President Muse Bihi’s actions, labelling the arrest as a blatant violation of freedom of speech and legal norms. They argue that the detention of an MP without formal charges or explanations undermines the democratic principles that Somaliland strives to uphold. Abib has criticized the current administration of Somaliland, alleging that it is dominated by a single clan and accusing it of engaging in corrupt practices. His statements have resonated with some constituents who feel marginalized by the current political structure. MP Abib stated he did not know why he was detained, and that his equipment and belongings were seized by the police.
